This lecture-recital, in honor of the 150th anniversary of Manuel de Falla’s birth, delves into the Spanish idioms woven throughout his celebrated piano work Fantasía Bética. The program explores how de Falla evokes cante jondo and incorporates flamenco-inspired percussive effects—such as castanet-like gestures and taconeo—into the music. Drawing on his Andalusian roots, de Falla became a passionate advocate for the preservation of cante jondo, organizing influential efforts with leading Spanish artists. The presentation will highlight his perspectives on the guitar, flamenco, and deep singing, illuminating their impact on his piano writing, and will offer insight from manuscripts related to the creation and commission of Fantasía Bética by Arthur Rubinstein.

Marina Bengoa Roldán, NCTM, is a Spanish pianist with a distinguished international career. She has appeared in prominent concert halls across the United States, Spain, Costa Rica, and throughout Europe, performing as a soloist, orchestral soloist, and chamber musician. Dr. Bengoa Roldán currently serves as Assistant Professor of Piano at Eastern New Mexico University (USA) and was previously on the faculty of Southern Arkansas University.
Dr. Bengoa Roldán earned her Doctorate in Piano Performance from the University of Oregon in 2022, studying under Dr. Alexandre Dossin, supported by a full scholarship. During her doctoral studies, she served as a piano instructor and collaborative pianist and was recognized with the Outstanding Award in Piano Pedagogy. In 2021, she completed her Master’s in Piano Pedagogy under Dr. Grace Ho, during which she founded spanishpianomusic.org, a resource dedicated to the pedagogy and promotion of Spanish piano repertoire.
Dr. Bengoa Roldán made her orchestral debut in 2013, performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Tetracorde Orchestra under Javier Carrau in Valencia, Spain. Her accolades include the Dean’s Award from the University of Georgia (2016) and winning the Brumby Competition at Georgia State University, which led to her performance of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Georgia State Symphony Orchestra under Michael Palmer. Notably, she recently commissioned and gave the world premiere of Fantasía Flamenca, composed for her by Pascual Gimeno.
Throughout her career, Marina has won numerous awards in national and international piano competitions. In 2022, she received grants from the Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation and the DSAC of the University of Oregon.
In addition to her active performing career, Dr. Bengoa Roldán regularly presents at national and international conferences. Her recent engagements include the Encuentro de Pianistas in Costa Rica (2026, 2024), the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy (Chicago, 2023 and 2021), the Arkansas Music Teachers Association (Arkansas, 2023), the SHE: Women in Music Festival (University of Arkansas, 2024), the PIPPA Conference (Piano Industry Professionals & Producers Affiliated, Las Vegas, 2025), the Cátedra Bogotá Musical Internacional (Colombia, 2022), Musicking (University of Oregon, 2021), and the Graduate Conference of Calgary (Canada, 2021), among others. She has been invited to perform her lecture recital on Manuel de Falla at prestigious Universities such as Texas Tech University (February 2026) and the University of Arizona (November 2026)
She is the co-founder of both the South Arkansas Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers of Eastern New Mexico, where she currently serves as president (Arkansas) and vice president (New Mexico).
